The First 70...
In 1954 Fort Lewis Federal Credit Union (FLFCU) was founded on Joint Base Lewis McChord in Washington by a handful of civilian employees of the U.S. Government who wanted to offer their fellow coworkers an alternative to commercial banks and other for-profit financial institutions.
FLFCU initially started in a small space at the Mt. Rainier Ordinance Depot. As the credit union grew, so did our need for office space. We moved into the current Main Branch building on JBLM, which was formerly occupied by Washington National Bank.
It’s amazing how times have changed for the credit union and our members. For instance, in 1964 the credit union accepted two Angus Cows valued at $150 each and two Hereford Cows valued at $200 each as collateral on a loan for a 1957 Plymouth. Now, our members conduct transactions and deposit checks through their mobile phone or tablet.
In 1965 our field of membership was extended to military soldiers, giving us many more opportunities for membership growth. The growth in membership has brought the need for new departments, an expansion of the Main branch, and an additional 13 new branch locations.
Throughout the years the credit union underwent four name changes until it became what it is known as today, America’s Credit Union (ACU). Kenneth Leonard was promoted to Vice President of the Credit Union in July of 1988 and later filled the President/CEO position in March of 1993 and remains CEO today for ACU. 
In 2014 we had the opportunity to move our headquarters to DuPont. We were able to consolidate departments that were spread out in our various buildings to one location. DuPont is the perfect home for ACU as it is populated with civilians, active and retired service members, just like our membership!
In 2018, we opened ACU Home Loans, a division focused on mortgage and home loan services. That year we also launched a Business Services department. Both divisions have seen steady growth, providing even more opportunities to serve the needs of our members.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, and Staff at ACU, we would like to extend our appreciation to you, our members. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to serve you over the last 70 years and we look forward to continuing to serve you in the years to come. Happy 70th Anniversary!
