ACU Shred Day

Shred Day Is Back – Safely Clear Out Your Paper Clutter
Join us on April 11 at our Lakewood Branch for our annual Shred Day, a free community event designed to help you safely dispose of sensitive documents and protect yourself from identity theft.
Paper clutter adds up quickly, and tossing personal documents in the trash can put your information at risk. Shred Day offers a secure, convenient way to destroy documents you no longer need while giving you peace of mind.
What Should You Bring to Shred?
As a general rule, if a document includes personal or financial information, it should be shredded once you no longer need it. Common items to bring include:
- Old bank and credit card statements
- Paid bills and invoices
- Junk mail with your name or account details
- Medical statements and insurance paperwork
- Tax documents that are past their recommended retention period
Only paper documents should be included. Please remove binders, folders, and non‑paper items before arriving.
How Long Should You Keep Important Documents?
Knowing what to keep and what to shred can be confusing. Here are some general guidelines:
- Tax returns and supporting documents – Keep for at least 7 years
- Bank and credit card statements – Keep for about 1 year, longer if needed for tax or budgeting purposes
- Pay stubs – Keep until you verify your W‑2 or annual summary
- Utility bills – Keep until payment is confirmed
- Legal documents, titles, and records – Keep permanently in a secure location
When in doubt, it is better to keep a document a little longer or check with a tax or legal professional before shredding.
Protect Your Information
Shredding documents you no longer need is one of the simplest ways to reduce fraud risk and protect your personal information. Shred Day makes it easy to take this important step while clearing out your files at the same time.
We look forward to seeing you on April 11 at our Lakewood Branch. Bring your documents, drive through, and shred with confidence.
