Honoring 250 Years: Celebrating the U.S. Army’s Birthday and Legacy

Saturday, June 14, 2025, marks a momentous occasion – the 250th birthday of the United States Army. At America’s Credit Union, we are proud to stand with our military community and honor the legacy of the Army, the oldest and one of the most respected branches of our Armed Forces.
A Legacy of Valor Since 1775
Founded on June 14, 1775, the U.S. Army was born out of the fight for independence. Since then, it has stood as a guardian of freedom, evolving through centuries of conflict and change. From the snowy fields of Valley Forge to the beaches of Normandy, the jungles of Vietnam, and the deserts of the Middle East, the Army has answered the call with courage and commitment.
Fort Lewis: A Proud Chapter in Army History
Our local connection to this legacy runs deep. Fort Lewis, now part of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), was established in 1917 and quickly became a vital training ground during World War I. Over the decades, it has been home to legendary units like the 2nd Infantry Division and I Corps.
One of the most iconic voices from Fort Lewis was General James H. Dickinson, who once said: “At JBLM, we train not just for today’s fight, but to be ready for whatever tomorrow brings. That’s the Army way.”
Another local hero, Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) John Troxell, who served at JBLM, reflected: “The Army isn’t just about battles – it’s about people. And here at Fort Lewis, we’ve always taken care of our own.”
Celebrating in the South Puget Sound
This year, the South Puget Sound region and JBLM are hosting several events to commemorate the Army’s 250th birthday:
- Army Heritage Week (June 7 – 14): A week of community events on base, including trivia nights, bowling tournaments, and family-friendly activities.
- NBA2K Tournament & Rock n’ Glow Bowling (June 14): Celebrate the Army’s birthday with fun and games at the Warrior Zone and Bowl Arena Lanes.
- JBLM Army Birthday Ball (June 18): The highlight of the celebration will be the formal Army Birthday Ball at Hotel Murano in Tacoma. Hosted by the Mount Rainier Chapter of the AGCRA, and sponsored by ACU, this elegant evening will feature remarks from LTG Matthew McFarlane and retired Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel Dailey. The event includes a formal dinner, music, and a celebration of Army tradition and camaraderie.
